Innocence

This work is part of the project CONTATTO within the Levante Contemporaneo: in which four artists create a quantity of works focused on a given geographical area. The project “Sull’Innocenza” (On Innocence) was created for the municipality of Rufina and is dedicated to the Massacre of Berceto, occurred on April 17, 1944. The members of the Vangelisti family, of which four were minors, were executed by the nazi army. The house of the late Vangelisti family, in which they lived together with all their livestock, was abandoned for many years, and has become a monument of this story which has inspired Elena to revisit the memory of this woeful day. The soldiers free the animals of the farm in which the father of the Vangelisti family worked, killing only one bull. When Lazaro, the father, saw that the animals were spared, he thought the soldiers would have mercy on him and his family; however, a terrible image of the death of his loved ones would follow. That day, innocent people were murdered, innocence was murdered. The artist, through metaphors of the death of the animals, innocent as the children were, communicates to the spectator the sense of emptiness and injustice. Subsequently, the drawings will transform into projections on the wall, not very clear, out-of-focus, as is a memory of a past time.
